I can see and feel the love, but $7,500 (obo) plus it’s seemingly minor issues... Remember: I’ve owned three of these and have spent more maintaining each one individually than all my other cars.

Sounds like this one needs a tune up and carb rebuild or tune and would be on it’s way. I don't know what these are valued at, but $7500 is into 2007 Volvo XC70 territory and that's a much more competent car than a 1985 Tercel.

Daaaang. That’s gorgeous. The decals the seats its got it all.
But 7500 bucks is stupid money for a car like that. Maybe like 4 grand.

The thing about these is: they're great. Even when they're awful they're still wonderful. But you'll never get that $7,500 back no matter what you improve, and you will ALWAYS be working on it, minor or otherwise. And for a labor of love like that... There are better candidates out there than this model it pains me to say

I think $7,500 is slightly absurdly high asking price.

7500 is more than I paid for my Paseo, even.

It's bordering on insanity.

Those seats are kick ass!

And amazingly comfortable. Perfect height off the floor. I could drive these for hours and never get sore or shift around...

As long as you're okay with an automatic they're basically worthless here too

Why do I feel that every photo of a Tercel interior has different seats? Did every Tercel get a unique seat pattern from the factory? I mean, I doubt it but that would be awesome

I hear you. You’d almost want a beat up one so you could live with some broken things as opposed to a really nice example that will nickel and dime you to death.
I don’t think I could drive a car as slow as these have to be. I just don’t have the patience.

How rare are they in good shape? He should BAT that thing, probably get that.

If this were just a bit more functional, I don’t think that’s actually a bad price. As is, there’s enough wrong with it I’d be worried about how much more I’d be dumping in. But really, it’s a 35 year old car, there aren’t that many left, and it’s clearly moving from beater status to collector status, and it works well for that, unusual shape, flashy decals (though they might not matter if it needs to be repainted), cool offroad features, those amazing seats. I don’t think it’s the sort of thing you can pick up for a couple thousand just because it’s a running car anymore. Obviously you can buy an objectively more functional car for the money, but that’s true of any car that old .

I tried to buy a FWD one of those a bunch of years ago but the owner did not respond to the note I left on their windshield.

1983-1987 non-SR5 Tercels of any body style got those horrible vinyl seats that crumbled to ashes after cracking like glass. 1983-1986 SR5s got the argyle cloth seats. 1987 SR5 wagon got 2-tone cloth seats but no argyle. Argyle was available in blue or brown to match the interior.

I don’t care how competent it is, I’d rather have the Tercel. But I don’t have $7500 anyway so...

My 86 SR5 had brown cloth boring pattern?

The mobile interface on that site is not great. Been there once and the infinite scroll plus b ogging data, plus reddit-inspired commenting, maybe it'll get better.

Same. Love the car, not the price.
Worked with a guy that had one years before. He sold real estate in ranch country and said it was ideal for driving clients around the properties.
